Wisdom teeth
also known as the third/final set of molars, are the last teeth that most
people get in their late teens or early twenties. However, in some cases,
people can even get them in their late adulthood. If they appear healthy, are

Why
should wisdom teeth be removed?
If your
wisdom teeth are healthy, have grown fully, are positioned correctly and do not

properly as a part of your daily hygiene practice then there is no need to get
your wisdom teeth removed.
However, if
your wisdom teeth do not have enough space to grow properly and evenly, then they
can cause a lot of pain and destruction to other teeth, and you will have to

follows:
· If wisdom teeth do not have enough
room to grow properly and it pushes the second molar or the adjoining teeth,
then it may damage other teeth and increase the risk of infection.

Before
the surgery:
Before
removing the wisdom tooth, the patient will be given an injection of
anaesthesia to numb the tooth and the surrounding area. If the patient is
feeling anxious about the removal process, then the dentist might also give him
a sedative to calm him down.
During
the surgery:
If the tooth
has erupted completely than it can easily be extracted. But if the tooth hasn’t
come out of the gum then a small cut will be made in your gum to access the
tooth properly. If a piece of bone is covering the tooth then it might also be
removed. Then the tooth may be cut into smaller parts so that it is easier to
remove them through the opening. During the procedure the patient would not
feel pain, because the area treated would be numb. The time required to
complete the surgery varies but it usually takes a few minutes. However, if the
situation is complicated then the surgery might go on for more than 20 minutes
as well.
After the
surgery:
If a cut is
made then the patient will be given stitches to seal the gum. These might
usually dissolve in 7 – 10 days. In some cases, the dentist might also
prescribe some antibiotics if you have ongoing infection and pain.
For 24 hours
after removing your wisdom teeth, you should avoid-
· Rinsing or spitting.
· Sucking actions.
· Drinking hot liquids.
· Drinking alcohol and smoking.
· Brushing the teeth directly neighboring the extracted tooth.
· Tiring/strenuous physical activity.
